Here is a link about what an ancient Hero may look like... Here is another
The term heros was used in Greek epic poems with the meaning "favored by the gods." In time, however, it came to be associated with a great or noble man, still later to an illustrious warrior or someone who was admired for ennobling qualities of spirit. Some heroes in epic literature are traditional, some are fictional, and some are based on real individuals, but heroism is always a masculine trait. This term has been used to designate the lifestyles of saints, martyrs, and even hermits. In more recent times, the figure of a "hero" has come to mean a character larger than life, often more moral or noble than his peers but not always; Hero worship has been attached to tricksters, confidence men, and even minor criminals. In the UNited States, heroes have often been viewed as individuals who are known for righting wrongs and bringing order. From this interpretation, we now have as heroes an entire array of Western Marshalls, private detectives, and policemen, all of whom rescue victims of injustice.
